Mumbai, March 7 (IANS) The body of a nine-year-old girl was Sunday discovered on the terrace of a building in the police housing colony in northeast Mumbai, police said.
As the news spread, hundreds of angry city residents from nearby areas marched to the police station in Nehru Nagar and held protests, demanding action against the culprits.

The victim, Anjali Jaiswal, was reported missing after 7.30 p.m. Saturday by her family. She was a Class 4 student and lived in a nearby slum.

Her body was discovered by the daughter of an assistant police inspector when she went to hang clothes to dry on the terrace around 10.30 a.m. Sunday. This created a sensation in the area and several hundred irate residents marched to the police station.

Police declined to reveal further details and the victim’s body, which bore some injury marks, has been sent for an autopsy to Rajawadi Hospital.

An official of the Nehru Nagar police station said a special team had been formed to probe the case.

The victim’s family, however, took strong exception to the police directly sending her body for an autopsy before informing them.

There are around a dozen buildings in the colony housing police personnel from different parts of Mumbai.

Relationship between the United States and Turkey is on shaky ground after the House Foreign Affairs Committee approved by the slimmest of margin a resolution that labels as genocide the killings of Armenians by soldiers of the Ottoman Empire.

The decision immediately drew criticism from Turkish President Abdullah Gul, who called the resolution “an injustice to history and to the science of history.” He added that Turkey “will not be responsible for the negative results”  from the resolution, which passed the committee via a 23-22 vote. Gul summoned Turkey’s Ambassador to the U.S. after the committee approved the resolution, which will now be forwarded for a vote by the full House of Representatives.

Historians estimate that Ottoman Turks were responsible for the deaths of up to 1.5 million Armenians during World War I. However, Turkey insists that the slaughter should not be called genocide because the deaths were caused by war.

President Barack Obama’s administration is against the resolution for its potential to hamper normalization of relationship between Turkey and Armenia. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the Obama administration has made it clear that the “full Congress…should not act upon that resolution.”

Controversial South African President Jacob Zuma has assured that his country is ready to protect fans, players, and officials who will be participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The self-confessed polygamist, who arrived in London on Thursday, said that security measures are already in place to ensure that no untoward incidents would occur during the one-month event set to begin on June 11.

Zuma said preparations are on track less than 100 days before what is probably the biggest sporting event in the world kicks off. He said all of the ten stadiums where games will be played are virtually complete, brushing aside doubts about his government’s capability to host the event. This is the first time that the World Cup will be held in the African continent.

The 67-year-old leader visited Wembley Stadium on Thursday to meet with several English sports officials. England is in the midst of a campaign to host the 2018 World Cup. Zuma said he was “sure England can win.” However, he refused to openly endorse London’s bid, saying that it was best to leave the decision to the FIFA leadership.

Sachin Tendulkar created history by firing the first double century in one-day internationals as India put South Africa to the sword in Gwalior.

The 36-year-old was in indomitable form as he bludgeoned 25 fours and three sixes in a stunning 200 off 147 balls.

It passed the previous best of 194, set by Pakistan’s Saeed Anwar in 1997 and Zimbabwe’s Charles Coventry last year.

And it saw India, aided by a fabulous cameo of 68 off 35 balls from Mahendra Dhoni, to a superb 401-3 from 50 overs.

Tendulkar, whose previous best one-day knock was the 186 not out he scored against New Zealand in 1999, is already the leading run-scorer in Test and ODI cricket.

But to have reached such a landmark, with a single in the final over, only serves to underline his class and add to the legacy that already surrounds arguably the finest batsman to have played the game.

Software giant Microsoft and search engine Yahoo! have been giving the go signal by American and European regulators to form an alliance. The former rivals will form a team in an effort to compete with Google, which is dominating the search engine wars.

The approval ends seven months of anxious waiting for both Microsoft and Yahoo!, which had toyed with the partnership idea as early as 2006. Microsoft even attempted to buy Yahoo! in 2008, but later reconsidered its $ 47.5 billion offer.

American Airlines and British Airways got a tentative US approval to strengthen their alliance without experiencing any antitrust problems.

It has been a decade quest since the airlines first attempted to get the immunity. The temporary approval becomes permanent after 60 days. This will allow the airlines to jointly price, market and schedule international flights in their Oneworld Alliance.

The approval didn’t come out without payment. The airlines were to give up four pairs of take-off and landing spots at the busiest airport in Europe – London Heathrow Airport. The slots are to be given to rivals that would provide new US services.

Port-au-Prince: The 10 American missionaries, who were detained while trying to take 33 children out of Haiti, were charged with child abduction and criminal conspiracy. They were arrested at the border with the Dominic Republic.

The Haitian authorities believe that the missionaries were trying to smuggle the children out of the country without valid documents. Their cases would now be sent to an investigating judge who would decide how to proceed.

The missionaries have returned to a jail in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, where they have been held since their arrest last Friday. They are members of a Christian charity called New Life Children’s Refuge. The group was led by Laura Silsby.
